Practice Routes Before Test Day

They say practice makes perfect, and that's certainly true for driving. On the day of your test, your chosen examiner will select one of 12 pre-determined routes for you to drive, so any practice along these routes will likely give you a big advantage. As you make your way around Poole, you will encounter a variety of different roads and junctions, including:

Main Roads

Busy roads such as the A35 and A350 involve higher-speed traffic, multiple lanes, and roundabouts, requiring you to demonstrate confidence in handling busy environments and making quick decisions at junctions.

Residential Streets

Residential areas like those in Parkstone and Canford Heath have narrow roads, frequent parked cars, and pedestrian crossings, all of which require careful navigation and attention to speed limits.

Coastal and Rural Roads

Coastal areas near Sandbanks or the rural outskirts of Poole can be more challenging due to their winding nature and the potential for reduced visibility, requiring precise vehicle control and good judgment.

Roundabouts

Significant roundabouts, such as those at Fleetsbridge and Hunger Hill require good lane discipline, effective signaling, and the ability to anticipate the actions of other drivers.

Dual Carriageways

Dual carriageways like the A31 or sections of the A3049 require you to demonstrate your ability to maintain higher speeds safely, execute lane changes, and merge with traffic efficiently.

Practicing Required Test Manoeuvres

If you’re well-versed in the routes, then you will know the likely spots where you may be asked to carry out one of the required manoeuvres. For instance you may be asked to undertake:

  • Parallel Parking: This manoeuvre might be tested in busy areas like Ashley Cross or quieter residential streets in Hamworthy. You'll need to park between two vehicles along the side of the road.

  • Pulling Up on the Right: Pulling up on the right-hand side of the road, reversing for a short distance, and then safely rejoining the traffic could be tested on quieter roads in the Poole Old Town or around Parkstone.

  • Reversing Around a Corner: This could be assessed in suburban areas such as Broadstone or Branksome where you'll be required to reverse around a corner, maintaining control of the vehicle and checking your surroundings.

  • Emergency Stop: Less busy roads, such as those near Creekmoor or Lilliput may be where you’ll need to stop the car promptly and safely on command, demonstrating quick reaction times and maintaining control.
