Practice Test Routes Before Test Day
The key to any succssful test is preparation. Route-familiarity is hugely beneficial for anyone looking to take their driving test, and by downloading and using our app, you will be driving each of the 13 possible routes chosen by your examiner on the day.
With each of the 13 routes taking a slightly different route through Dorchester, you can expect to encounter the following road types:
Main Roads
Major routes such as the A35 and A37 feature higher speed limits and heavier traffic and will challenge your ability to handle faster-moving vehicles, overtaking maneuvers, and roundabouts like the ones at Monkeys Jump.
Residential Streets
Fordington, Poundbury and other residential areas typically have narrow roads, frequent parked cars, and pedestrian activity, which will require careful speed control and precise control.
Rural Roads
Roads near villages like Maiden Newton or Martinstown can be narrow and winding, with the potential for encountering farm vehicles or cyclists, requiring you to demonstrate careful observation and control.
Historic Town Centre
A mix of narrow streets and busier junctions will test your ability to handle complex traffic scenarios. Areas like High East Street or around the Dorset County Hospital are where traffic can be heavier and road layouts more intricate.
Roundabouts
Successfully navigating roundabouts such as those on the A354 and A35 will require you to choose the correct lane, signal appropriately, and make safe, timely decisions.
Practicing Required Manoeuvres
During your test you will need to perform one 'required manoeuvre'. Becoming familiar with the test routes can help you to identify likely spots where these might take place. The manoeuvres and their possible locations could be:
Parallel Parking: You might be tested on this around Fordington or on quieter streets near Poundbury. Successfully parking between two vehicles requires careful judgment and precise vehicle control.
Reversing Around a Corner: Possibly in a quieter area off Bridport Road, you’ll need to reverse around a corner smoothly, keeping the vehicle under control.
Pulling Up on the Right: You might be asked to pull up on the right-hand side of the road, reverse for a short distance, and then safely rejoin traffic on less busy roads, such as those in the suburban areas of Dorchester or near Castle Park.
Emergency Stop: This could be tested on quieter roads, possibly near the outskirts of Fordington where you'll need to stop the car promptly and safely on command.
