Practice The Routes Before Test Day
There is no better test day preparation than performing mock tests. Route familiarity is the key to a confident examination. On the day of your test you will follow a pre-determined route, so knowing any tricky-spots in advance will help put you at ease. Here’s what you can expect to encounter:
A Roads
Major roads such as the A49 and A50 are common across the 9 test routes, providing a mix of higher-speed driving and multi-lane traffic. These roads will showcase your ability to merge, overtake, and maintain appropriate speeds.
Residential Areas
You'll be asked to navigate through local neighborhoods, such as those around Birchwood Way and Orford during your lessons, where you must handle narrow streets, parked cars, and frequent junctions. These areas are ideal for demonstrating your observation skills and ability to manage slower speeds in a controlled manner.
Rural Roads
Routes may extend to the outskirts of Warrington, including areas near Croft and Winwick, where you'll drive on narrower, winding roads. These sections eill showcase your ability to react to sharp bends and potential hazards like cyclists and farm vehicles.
Roundabouts
Warrington is known for its numerous roundabouts, including those at Winwick Rd and Kingsway North. Handling roundabouts requires good judgment, lane discipline, and the ability to make safe decisions without hesitation.
Dual Carriageways
Test routes may occasionally include stretches of dual carriageway, such as the A574 Cromwell Avenue. On these you can demonstrate your ability to change lanes, merge safely, and maintain higher speeds in a controlled manner.
Practice Test Manoeuvres
If you’re familiar with the routes you will be taking during your exam, then you can have increased confidence when undertaking one of the required manoeuvres.
Parallel Parking: Often tested in residential areas like those around Padgate and Latchford, you'll need to park between two cars on the side of the road without touching the curb or other vehicles.
Reversing Around a Corner: Typically assessed in quieter streets such as those near Stockton Heath. You’ll need to reverse around a corner, maintaining control and accuracy while checking for pedestrians and other vehicles.
Pulling Up on the Right: You might be asked to pull up on the right-hand side of the road, reverse for a short distance, and then rejoin traffic safely. This can be tested on quieter roads, such as those near Grappenhall.
Emergency Stop: This could be tested on various roads due to traffic volume, possibly on quieter sections like Long Lane. You'll need to stop the car promptly and safely on command.

The test centre is situated at Festival Avenue, a quiet residential area just 10 minutes from the city centre. It offers a range of facilities such as disabled access, toilets and parking. Encouragingly, the current pass rate of 60% is higher than the national average. Getting to the test centre is easy, and there are numerous transport links available.
