Practise All Routes Before Test Day
The key to a successful test-day is confidence. On the day of your test you will drive one of eight pre-determined routes as chosen by your examiner.
By familiarising yourself with the routes in advance you can not only increase your confidence, but make yourself aware of any potentially difficult areas. As you drive through Llantrisant, you can expect to encounter the following road types:
Main Roads
Sections of the A4119 or A473 will require you to handle higher-speed traffic, perform safe lane changes, and navigate roundabouts effectively. This will demonstrate your ability to maintain control at higher speeds and merge with fast-moving traffic.
Residential Streets
Quieter residential areas such as Talbot Green and Beddau present challenges like narrow roads, parked cars, and frequent pedestrian crossings, requiring you to demonstrate careful observation and precise control.
Rural Roads
Roads near Llanharry or Groes-faen can be narrow and winding, with the potential for encountering slower-moving vehicles, demonstrating careful handling and good anticipation skills.
Roundabouts
Navigating key roundabouts, such as the one near the Royal Glamorgan Hospital, involves choosing the correct lane, signaling appropriately, and making timely decisions.
Dual Carriageways
Your test might include dual carriageways like the A4119, where you'll need to demonstrate your ability to maintain higher speeds, safely merge, and change lanes.
Test Manoeuvre Practise
There are likely spots where your examiner will require you to perform one of the required manoeuvres, and as you familiarise yourself with the test routes these are less likely to be a surprise. You may be asked to perform:
Reversing Around a Corner: Practiced on quieter streets, such as those near Beddau or Cross Inn, this manoeuvre tests your ability to maintain control and observe your surroundings for pedestrians and other traffic.
Pulling Up on the Right: Pulling up on the right-hand side of the road, reversing for a short distance, and then rejoining traffic safely could be tested on quieter roads on the outskirts of Llanharry, and requires careful control.
Emergency Stop: Tested on less busy roads, possibly around Groes-faen or nearby rural areas. You'll need to stop the car promptly and safely on when asked.
Parallel Parking: Residential areas like those around Talbot Green or Llanharan are likely spots for this manoeuvre, showcasing your ability to control the car with precision.

Firstly, try not to be too disappointed, you're not alone in having to re-take your test. It's likely that it didn't go your way on the day, not that you weren't ready. Your examiner would not recommend you take your test if they didn't think you were good enough. It's advised to book another test slot as soon as possible to avoid further delays, and keep on practising your test routes.
