Practise Routes Before You Take Your Test

Becoming familiar with the latest test routes is key for a confident test-day. You will be following one of six pre-determined routes decided by your examiner, so being familiar with the roads and any tricky-spots puts you at a huge advantage. During your drive through Livingston you can expect to encounter some or perhaps all of the following road types:

Dual Carriageways

Sections of dual carriageway, such as the A705 Livingston Road will test your skills in maintaining higher speeds, safely merging, and changing lanes under controlled conditions.

Residential Areas

Residential areas like Eliburn and Ladywell will present challenges such as tight corners, parked cars, and frequent pedestrian crossings. Your ability to drive cautiously and maintain control at lower speeds will be important.

A Roads

You will likely drive on roads such as the A899 and A71, featuring higher speed limits and multiple lanes, testing your ability to navigate fast-moving traffic, perform safe lane changes, and manage merging traffic.

Roundabouts

Roundabouts such as Dechmont require good lane discipline, effective signaling, and the ability to make quick, safe decisions.

Suburban / Rural Roads

Roads on the outskirts of Livingston, including areas near Pumpherston and Uphall can be narrower and more winding, requiring precise handling and awareness of potential hazards like farm vehicles and cyclists.

Test Manoeuvre Practise

If you’re well-versed in the routes, then you will know the likely spots where you may be asked to carry out one of the required manoeuvres. For instance you may be asked to undertake:

  • Pulling Up on the Right: Pulling up on the right-hand side of the road, reversing for a short distance, and then rejoining traffic safely is often tested on quieter roads like those near Mid Calder and requires good observation and control.

  • Emergency Stop: The examiner may ask you to perform an emergency stop on various roads, possibly quieter sections like the residential streets in Craigshill. You’ll need to bring the vehicle to a prompt and safe stop on command.

  • Parallel Parking: Frequently tested in residential areas such as Deans and Dedridge, precision and control are essential to avoid touching the curb or other vehicles.

  • Reversing Around a Corner: You may be asked to reverse around a corner in quieter neighbourhoods like Murieston, maintaining accuracy and control while keeping an eye out for pedestrians and other road users.

 FAQs

  • Yes. We are the only route provider to work closely with DVSA examiners and live GPS data to actively monitor live test routes ensuring they are accurate, and are kept updated almost daily.

  • We think so, and lots of people have left us great reviews!

This app is a helpful training aid designed to increase your confidence when it comes to test day.

  • The app can help you identify likely locations for your set manoeuvre.

When you're confident with the roads you will be travelling on, it won't be as much as a surprise/challenge when you are asked to perform one of the tasks mentioned above.

  • Practise and more practise is the answer.

Drive all of the six real test routes at different times of the day, in different weather until you are fully prepared to drive them under test conditions.

  • Try not to be too disheartened.

Your examiner would not have suggested you taking the test if you weren't ready... so perhaps the test just didn't go quite your way this time.

Many others have to re-take the test, so it's advised to re-book a new slot and keep practising for next time.
