Master The Routes Before Test Day

Preparation is your best tool for success, especially when it comes to your driving test. On the day, the examiner will have you follow one of 21 specific routes. By familiarising yourself with these routes ahead of time, you'll be better equipped to handle any challenging spots that may arise. When driving through Darlington, be ready to navigate a mix of road types, including:

Main Roads

Stretches of busy roads like the A167 or North Road, which are located close to the test centre, require you to manage higher-speed traffic, execute safe overtaking maneuvers, and navigate multiple lanes.

Residential Streets

Nearby residential areas such as Harrowgate Hill and Albert Hill often feature narrow roads, parked cars, and frequent pedestrian crossings, making it essential to maintain a steady speed and be vigilant of your surroundings.

Rural Roads

Your test might include roads leading out towards areas like Beaumont Hill or Whinfield. These roads can be narrower and more winding, with the potential for encountering slower-moving vehicles.

Town Centre Traffic

The Darlington town centre, particularly near Duke Street or Bondgate, might be part of your route and navigating these busier areas will test your ability to handle stop-and-go traffic, manage complex junctions, and deal with pedestrian activity.

Roundabouts

Key roundabouts, such as those on Northgate and St. Cuthbert's Way require good lane discipline, timely signaling, and quick, safe decision-making under pressure.

Practicing Required Test Manoeuvres

As you practice your routes you will become familiar with the likely locations of a required manoeuvre. You will be asked to undertake one of the following:

  • Parallel Parking: This could be tested in residential areas close to the test centre, such as those around Harrowgate Hill or Rise Carr. You’ll be required to park between two cars on the side of the road.

  • Reversing Around a Corner: Quieter streets near Whessoe Road or Cleveland Avenue may be the setting to reverse around a corner smoothly while maintaining control and checking for other road users.

  • Pulling Up on the Right: Less busy roads like those in the Whinfield or Harrowgate Hill might be suitable areas to pull up on the right-hand side of the road, reverse a short distance, then safely rejoin traffic.

  • Emergency Stop: Conducted on quieter roads, possibly around the industrial areas near North Road or close to Darlington Railway Centre. You'll need to stop the car promptly and safely on command.
