Prepare Thoroughly with Test Route Practice
Confidence on your driving test day comes from thorough preparation. Your examiner will guide you through one of the 16 designated routes around Chichester. By practicing these routes beforehand, you'll gain a strong understanding of the local roads, which can significantly boost your confidence. While navigating Chichester, you should be prepared to encounter a variety of road conditions, such as:
Main Roads
Major routes such as the A27 or A259, both located near the test centre, are busy, with higher speed limits and multiple lanes, requiring you to demonstrate your ability to manage fast-moving traffic, safely change lanes, and navigate roundabouts such as those at Fishbourne and Portfield.
Residential Areas
The areas around Whyke and Donnington have narrow lanes, parked cars, and frequent pedestrian crossings, testing your ability to drive cautiously and maintain control at lower speeds.
Rural Roads
Roads leading towards areas like Westhampnett or Oving can be narrow and winding, with sharp bends and the potential for encountering farm vehicles or cyclists.
Town Centre Traffic
More complex traffic situations, particularly around East Street or Market Avenue will challenge your ability to handle busy junctions, manage stop-and-go traffic, and interact with pedestrians and cyclists.
Roundabouts
Chichester is known for its busy roundabouts, such as those at the junctions of the A286 and A27. Successfully navigating these roundabouts requires good lane discipline, clear signaling, and quick, confident decision-making.
Test Manoeuvre Practice
The more you practice the routes, the more familiar you will become with the likely areas in which you will be required to perform one of the set manoeuvres. You will be required to carry out one of the following:
Parallel Parking: Tested on quieter residential streets close to the test centre, such as those around Whyke Road or in the vicinity of East Broyle. You'll need to park between two vehicles along the side of the road.
Reversing Around a Corner: Assessed on quieter roads possibly near Meadow Way or Whyke Lane. You’ll need to reverse around a corner smoothly and accurately, keeping the vehicle under control while maintaining awareness.
Pulling Up on the Right: You may be asked to pull up on the right-hand side of the road, reverse for a short distance, and then safely rejoin traffic on less busy roads near Portfield or New Park Road.
Emergency Stop: Conducted on quieter roads, possibly around the areas near Westhampnett or Oving. You'll need to stop the car promptly and safely on command.
Chichester Driving Test Centre
The Test Centre is situated in the Businss Park off City Fields Way which is only 10 minutes from the city centre. With a very encouraging pass rate of 65% (far higher than the national average) it remains a popular centre for learner drivers. It offers easy access, parking (though limited on-site there is plenty in the surrounding area) and toilets, and there are transport links available including the A27. Click for directions here or view it on Street View.
